Algemeen
In the municipality of Reimerswaal, waste is collected separately. Here you will find information about waste separation and collecting in Reimerswaal.
Waste separation in Reimerswaal
In the municipality of Reimerswaal, waste is collected separately. Read here which materials you can separate.
• Organic Waste (vegetable, fruit, garden Waste, and food Scraps)
• PMD (Plastic Packaging, Metal Packaging, and Drink Cartons)
• Glass Bottles
• Textiles
• Old paper and cardboard
The waste you have left after proper separation is residual waste and can be disposed of in the gray residual waste container with a gray color clip on the lid.
Charges
You pay an annual basic fee, plus a variable fee based on the number of times you present residual waste for collection or dispose of it in an underground residual waste container. The variable fees are charged to you the following year in arrears. You can minimise your costs by disposing of residual waste less often. The other types of waste are collected free of charge. Visit www.sabewazeeland.nl to find out about the rates.
Why is waste separation important?
Two-thirds of all household residual waste consists of valuable, recyclable materials. Too much of this ends up in the incinerator. There is still room to improve the separation of waste into reusable materials. Glass goes to the glass container, organic waste in the organic waste container, and so on. Moreover, you save money by better separating waste.
What belongs where?
You can check what kind of waste goes where on the website of ZRD. www.zrd.nl/afvalwijzer
Organic waste (GFT)
In the gray container with a green clip on the lid, you dispose of GFT waste. GFT consists of kitchen waste such as (cooked) food scraps and peels, and small garden waste such as mowed grass, leaves, and pruned branches. GFT waste is organic waste that forms the basis for compost.
Collection within city limits
Within city limits, GFT is collected once every two weeks. Check the waste calendar for collection days. The waste calendar can be found on the website of the Zeeuwse Reinigingsdienst or via the ZRD app. www.zrd.nl/wanneer
Collection in rural areas
In rural areas, GFT waste is collected on the same day as residual waste. The containers are emptied in two separate compartments of the truck. It may seem that the waste is mixed, but it is not!
Consequences of incorrect use of the GFT Container
If incorrect waste is found during GFT collection, the container will not be emptied. The incorrect waste must first be removed. This means the container will be emptied on the next collection day. Upon a subsequent violation, you risk a fine of € 95,00 per offense. Check the do’s and dont's list to see what can and cannot go in the GFT container. www.reimerswaal.nl/groente-fruit-en-tuinafval-en-etensresten
Plastic packaging, Metal packaging, and Drink cartons (PMD)
PMD stands for Plastic packaging, Metal packaging, and Drink cartons. Since July 1, 2021, there is a deposit of 15 cents on plastic bottles, and since April 1, 2023, this also applies to cans. You can return these to supermarkets.
Check the do’s and don’ts list to see what can and cannot go with PMD.

How often is PMD collected?
PMD is collected every two weeks in bags at your home. You can order the bags via the website of the Zeeuwse Reinigingsdienst www.zrd.nl/pmd-zakken-bestellen, the ZRD app, or by phone at 0115-478100. The ordered bags are delivered to your home by post at no cost. If incorrect waste is in the container or bag, the Zeeuwse Reinigingsdienst will not take it. A sticker will be placed indicating what you need to do.
How to offer PMD:
• Put the bag outside only on the collection day or the night before.
• Tie the bag tightly.
• Attach multiple bags together.
• Do not hang bags on underground containers or place them on the base plate.
• Do not tie bags to fences or poles.
• Offer the bag at the designated place where containers are also offered.
Old paper and cardboard
Old paper and cardboard are collected by clubs and churches or can be brought to a collection container yourself. On the municipality’s website, you will find the locations for old paper and cardboard disposal. www.reimerswaal.nl/welk-afval-mag-waar#oud-papier-en-karton-812
Check the do’s and don’ts list to see what can and cannot go with old paper. www.reimerswaal.nl/welk-afval-mag-waar#oud-papier-en-karton-812
• Old paper you separate must be clean and dry. Used tissues or dirty pizza boxes do not belong with old paper.
• A single staple, paper clip, or plastic window (from envelopes) can stay with old paper. These are removed during recycling. Remove plastic film, plastic binders, and covers on magazines or advertising brochures.
• Drink cartons do not belong with old paper because they contain a plastic and/or aluminum layer. These go with PMD waste.
• Laminated paper cannot be recycled and belongs with residual waste. Laminated paper does not tear well. Most glossy magazines made of thick shiny paper can go with old paper. Sometimes only the cover is laminated. That belongs with residual waste.
• Books can also go with old paper, but you can also bring them to a thrift store or leave them in a mini-library.
• Offer paper and cardboard in handy cardboard boxes or paper bags.
Textiles and old clothing
You can dispose of clothing, shoes, and textiles in special clothing containers distributed in neighborhoods or at the recycling center. No matter how old or worn, your textiles can certainly be reused.
Check the do’s and don’ts list to see what can and cannot go with textiles. www.reimerswaal.nl/welk-afval-mag-waar#textiel-en-oude-kleding-814
On the municipality’s website, you will find the locations of the textile containers. www.reimerswaal.nl/welk-afval-mag-waar#textiel-en-oude-kleding-814
Glass
Packaging glass can be disposed of in the collection container (glass bin) in your neighborhood or at the recycling center. On the municipality’s website, you will find the locations of the glass containers. www.reimerswaal.nl/welk-afval-mag-waar#glas-810
Glass is excellent for reuse. In fact, it can be endlessly recycled with a very high yield: 1 kg of glass shards produces 1 kg of glass.

Residual waste
The residual waste remaining after sorting your waste properly will be collected from your home once every 4 weeks. You should dispose of this waste in a grey residual waste container with a grey handle. If your home is connected to an underground residual waste container, then you can dispose of it there.
Bulky Waste
Bulky waste is household waste that is too large or too heavy to fit in a waste container. You can bring bulky waste to the recycling center. If you want to dispose of furniture that is still in good condition, you can take it to a thrift store. They sell these items as second-hand furniture. Sometimes thrift stores will also pick up items from your home. You can also have bulky waste collected at your home on fixed dates. The municipality only collects private waste, not from businesses.
We collect the following:
• Electrical/electronic devices: such as household appliances.
• Bulky garden waste: plant-based or organic waste that, due to its nature, composition, or size, does not fall under GFT waste and arises from the creation, maintenance, or removal of private greenery, such as large leafy waste or pruned wood.
• Bulky household waste: large or heavy household waste that, due to its size or weight, cannot be offered in a container for collection.
• Mattresses: these must be dry and clean; otherwise, they will not be collected. Cover a mattress, for example, with a piece of tarp. What we do not collect as bulky waste: small chemical waste, asbestos-containing waste, glass/mirrors, construction/demolition waste. Construction/demolition waste includes, for example, demolished kitchen cabinets, rubble, roof tiles, etc. These are separate waste categories.
How it works
• Collection is possible by appointment with the Zeeuwse Reinigingsdienst (ZRD), which can be arranged via the ZRD website. www.zrd.nl/grof-huishoudelijk-afval-afspraak-maken
• Payment is made via an invoice from the Zeeuwse Reinigingsdienst. The cost is € 30,00 with a maximum of 2 m3.
• Bulky waste must be ready at a conveniently accessible place at the home by 8:00 am on the agreed day.
• No more than 2 m3 per collection.
• Smaller pieces must be compressed and bound. Nothing should be able to blow away.
Recycling Center
A recycling center is a place where you can bring your waste. Here, you can dispose of waste that the municipality does not collect from your home and which does not belong in the gray residual waste container. For example, old furniture or items with a plug or battery. Also, paint, frying fat, mattresses, and PMD bags can be brought here.

Use of underground residual waste container
• Do not overfill the input opening; the bag will get stuck. This causes a malfunction, and the container will no longer be usable.
• Do not throw loose waste in the input opening.
• Do not place waste next to the input column, as this causes litter and nuisance for residents (think of animals and pests). You also risk a fine.
• Use the container only between 7:00 AM and 10:00 PM to minimize noise nuisance for residents.
• Never park your car in front of or on the base plate of the underground container, as the truck will not be able to access it to empty it.
• The cost per emptying is € 2,00.
